GoodNews Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 19, 2026
GoodNews is a browser extension that helps users hide heavy or unwanted social-feed topics on supported websites. This policy explains what GoodNews processes, what it stores locally in the browser, what may be sent to the hosted feedback service, and how to contact us about privacy questions.
1. Who we are
- Jakob Linner
- Privacy contact: privacy@linnra.com
- Support contact: support@linnra.com
2. What GoodNews does
GoodNews runs in the browser on supported sites such as Reddit, X, and Facebook. It checks visible post content against user-selected filters and can hide matching posts from the page. Most GoodNews settings and filtering activity stay local in the browser.
3. Data stored locally in the browser
- filtering settings, including selected topics and site toggles
- optional custom keywords entered by the user
- local statistics such as hidden-post counts
- local setup export or import data created by the user
- local feedback queue items created by the user before any hosted sharing
4. Hosted feedback
Hosted feedback sharing is optional and off by default. If a user explicitly agrees to hosted feedback sharing in the GoodNews settings page, the extension may send limited feedback reports when the user marks a post as Wrongly hidden or saves a Missed post example.
By default, the hosted feedback payload is limited to report type, site ID, label, short detail text, shortened redacted excerpt, anonymous install ID, browser or platform metadata, and plan ID. Page URLs are not sent unless the user separately enables scrubbed URL sharing.
5. Data minimization
- raw page titles are not uploaded
- URLs are off by default
- shared URLs are scrubbed before upload
- obvious links, email addresses, handles, and some usernames are redacted from excerpts
- excerpts are shortened before upload
6. Why we process this data
We process local extension data to apply the user's chosen feed filters, save the user's settings on that browser, and let the user review or change filtering behavior. If the user opts into hosted feedback, we process hosted feedback reports to review false positives and missed posts, improve filtering quality, and monitor product stability.
7. Legal basis
For users in the EEA and UK, hosted feedback sharing is intended to rely on the user's consent because hosted sharing is optional and explicitly enabled by the user in the extension. Local browser storage that is necessary for the extension to work is processed to provide the service requested by the user.
8. Retention
Hosted feedback is currently designed around a retention window of about 30 days unless a different period is stated in-product. Local browser storage remains on the user's browser until the user changes or clears it, resets the relevant extension data, or removes the extension.
9. Sharing and processors
Hosted feedback is currently processed using the configured hosting provider for the GoodNews backend. We do not sell user data.
10. User choices
- keep hosted feedback sharing off
- turn automatic hosted feedback sharing on or off
- choose whether scrubbed page URLs may be included
- reset local feedback data
- remove the extension
11. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect hosted feedback, including consent-gated hosted sharing, limited payload design, owner-token protection for owner-only review actions, and retention pruning.
12. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights relating to access, deletion, objection, restriction, correction, or complaint to a supervisory authority. Requests can be sent to privacy@linnra.com.
13. Changes
We may update this policy from time to time. If a change materially affects hosted feedback collection or sharing, we will update the in-product disclosure and policy date.
